O Marinheiro Restaurant

When looking for a good, wholesome restaurant in Albufeira, the village of Sesmarias may not be your first choice, but if you own a car or have the chance to rent one to explore the surroundings of Albufeira and the Algarve’s coastline, you should not miss the opportunity to eat at the lovely O Marinheiro Restaurant.

Thanks to its quiet location away from the hustle and bustle of Albufeira’s city centre, O Marinheiro Restaurant warmly welcomes you as soon as you come in the front door and into a lovely, charmingly room, decorated with rustic details and hints of the Algarve’s nautical past.

Founded by Monika and Joaquim Coelho over a decade ago, O Marinheiro Restaurant has since enjoyed an excellent reputation of premium food with the best local and seasonal products and a selection of Portuguese-based dishes and international-inspired cuisine.

The menu is prepared in a way that suits all tastes and epicurean requests, from freshly caught fish and seafood to vegetarian and lip-smacking meat dishes. At the O Marinheiro Restaurant, guests are given plenty of time to choose their meal from the menu as they indulge on an appetizer at the bar.

The Tagliatelle “Al Mar” (sautéed Tagliatelle with pesto sauce, clams, mussels and prawns), the Monkfish “Marinheiro Style” (sautéed monkfish with oregano and garlic on a bed of turnip tops and served with new potatoes), the Lamb “Provençal” (grilled lamb fillet on “Provençal” sauce, vegetables and gratin potatoes), the Duck Breast Marinheiro’s Signature (fried duck breast on a berry sauce, served with Tagliatelle and sautéed courgette with pine nuts) and the Mixed kebab “Castro Marim” (beef and pork fillet grilled on a kebab, French fries, salad and creamy pepper sauce) are just a few of the house specialities that embrace the Portuguese cuisine with a savvy twist.

To top it all off, choose one of the sublime desserts, such as Blackberry sorbet with Medronho or White & brown chocolate mousse. The meal, however, would not be complete without one of their wine bottles from their richly diversified winery, with plenty of well-chosen local and national selections. Make sure you ask Joaquim for help and he will certainly be more than happy to suggest the most appropriate wine to go with your meal.

If you are thinking of visiting O Marinheiro Restaurant during the summer, make sure you book beforehand, and feel free to take your children with you so they can also enjoy the lovely children’s menu and have a little fun at the playground.

And if the weather allows it, ask for a table in the charming shaded terrace, a definitely point in favour for this restaurant in the village of Sesmarias, Albufeira.
